The Importance of Reading

We would like to take this opportunity to highlight the importance of reading daily with your child at home. Just 10 – 15 minutes of shared reading each day can make a significant difference in your child’s learning journey. Reading is one of the most valuable skills children can develop, as it supports not only academic success but also personal growth and well-being. Regular reading helps to build strong language skills, expand vocabulary and enhance comprehension, all of which are essential for learning across every subject. Beyond academics, reading fosters imagination, empathy, confidence and critical thinking – skills that help children thrive both in and out of the classroom.

At school, all children have been assessed and provided with an Oxford Reading book that matches their individual reading ability, as well as a library book chosen to encourage a lifelong love of stories. To nurture this enjoyment, we take children to the library every week for a reading session and encourage them to change their books regularly. We also have scanners available in the classroom, making it easy for children to select a new book whenever they are ready.

To further support and inspire reading, our library will be open from 08:30 each morning until registration and again at the end of the school day until 15:50. This gives children extra opportunities to explore books, discover new stories, and develop a love of reading that will benefit them for years to come.
