Swimming Success
11 September, 2026
Swimming is one of the most important life skills a child can learn and at Croft Junior School we treat it with the seriousness it deserves. From Year 3 through to Year 6, every child takes part in swimming lessons. This is not an optional extra alongside subjects such as English science or art. It sits firmly within the statutory national curriculum – every child deserves the chance to become safe confident and capable in the water.
We are proud of the offer we provide. Half of each cohort attends lessons at any one time supported by three swim teachers ensuring small groups and close attention throughout every session. Two of these teachers (Mr Powers and Mrs Clarke) are part of our own staff team, bringing consistency and familiarity that helps children feel settled and supported as they build their skills.
Very few schools (if any) provide swimming provision across all four years and to the level we do. Many schools offer only a single term or a single year group. Providing this from Year 3 right through to Year 6 reflects our commitment to giving every child the time and repetition needed to truly master this skill rather than simply experience it once.
The benefits stretch far beyond the pool. Swimming builds water safety awareness physical fitness confidence and resilience. It teaches children to persevere through challenge and to celebrate progress in a skill that will serve them for life.
We hope you share our pride in this provision and continue to support your child in embracing every opportunity it brings.
